Artist Confession by StarshipSorceress Artist Confession by StarshipSorceress
This is something I recently submitted to ArtistConfessions on Tumblr. It hasnt been posted by the moderaters yet, but it should be within a few days (edit: post is here: [link])

So why am I posting it here too, you ask? Simply because I also want my watchers to know something:

Improvement is not impossible.

I've had a few people tell me they will never improve and that they cant afford classes and that they wish they could be a better artist.

I'm here to say, you can.

90% of my improvement over the last 2-3 years is credit to online resources and a dedication to being better.

In the confession I basically state why it is I take time out of my day to help random strangers online who have questions about art. The reason is because if it werent for other people helping ME out all those years ago, I might not be where I am today.

So thank you people of the online art community. You have given me something that I can only hope to repay by helping the way you did.

Im not sure where to submit this. Memes? Memes.

I  wish to learn traditional & digital  painting but I  thought its too hard & I cant   do it.
After I read this confession I think that Im just lazy and if someone can improve to this work level  as  you did so why not me! :)
Thank you

It is pretty hard to learn how to draw and paint, even I still have a bajillion things to learn. But one day at a time, right? (:
It's hard to push myself to practice sometimes, but I do try to at least draw a little every day, even if it's just to color an unfinished sketch.

This is amazing and true!
I didn't even improve as much as you since I got into the art community online in 2010, but the support I have been receiving is overwhelming, and I feel like my artistic skills progress much more quickly with every month that passes.
Sending cute doodles back and forth with other artists, doing commissions and creating fan art is not only super fun, but also an amazing amount of practice, and it's wonderfully easy to find advice online. The most wonderful thing is when I see an artist whose work I really like, and ask them how they do something I especially like about it - and they respond by actually teaching me. While I can do that offline with other artists as well, it's only online that I find such a huge variety of styles and methods I can learn from!

My parents still aren't convinced that me being online so much serves any kind of purpose. I can only shake my head about that. Not only is the internet community the most diverse teacher I had so far, it's also the most nonjudgemental one. Universities and colleges in my area keep rejecting artists like me with reasonings like "all of that art is probably just downloaded or something" or "pft she's not able to wield a wiede variety of traditional methods so how should she be able to do art?" or "it's not art unless it's at least a bit abstract. But don't even come here if you draw a comicky style!"
The art community online never refused to teach or guide me. It never rejected me from being taught more just because of what I was still lacking.

And I know that it will lead me to an even higher level of skill with time, practice and some discipline on my part. X3

I feel the same way. The online art community has been a blessing to me in many ways. I often wonder where I would be without it. I think DA especially is what really made me realize how much I wanted to be an artist. All of the amazing work on here along with the tutorials and group projects is such a motivation to keep pushing forward.

Haha, my mom probably wonders about my online interaction too. I dont think she realizes how much it helps me XD I think it's sad that schools would turn you down on biased prejudice. What area are you in? The schools I'm planning to apply for are great for comic and digital media artists :3

I live in Germany, and here public school education is financially supported by the government while private schools are harder to fund. Which creates a problem for every branche many people want to study in (like art) by giving you a huge crowd to compete against for your education. This is made even harder by the fact that things like illustration or animation are hardly supported by public schools at all, the education system simply hasn't caught on on these things being viable jobs yet.

So less different majors more people go for.

And most of the universities apparently host juries full of people who think that computers are some kind of art creating witchcraft machines. >.< At least that's what my teachers at portfolio class tell me.

It has been fantastic seeing how quickly and how much you've improved! I've still got a ways to go but it's reassuring to know that even just from online resources (from helpful people like you) I can get better.

I always welcome critique from anybody and everybody, it's amazing how much it helps to have others point out the things that you can improve on. I have improved far faster with intense critique! Congrats on coming so far yourself!

That's very true! Critiques are meant to help and not insult, which is why I love giving and receiving them (: I've had several derp areas in past works of mine pointed out and it helped me to not make the same mistakes again XD

I know exactly what you mean, I first decided I wanted to try learning how to draw (for like the 5th time) around a year and a half ago. For a long time, all of my drawings were horrible, but I kept at it, practiced every day, and looked up a whole lot of tutorials online. I'm still nowhere near where I'd like to be, but I've been amazed at the improvement I've seen in the time I've been working at it.

Glad to hear you didnt give up! There are many times my art depressed me and I wanted to call it quits. But I'm determined to become better, and with constant practice I have definitely improved :3 If I ever get depressed again I always look at improvement memes to inspire me ^^

One of my favorite groups is #KickYourOwnAss just for this reason. It's incredibly inspiring to go through the gallery and see how much (and how incredibly) artists improve in a year or two's time. It's night and day, and it's awesome.

Every artist should do one of those time to time. You don't see improvement from one piece to the other...but put a couple pieces from last year next to a couple from this year, and BAM.

Definitely. I try not to throw out everything I draw, even when it's tempting sometimes. It's funny to look back and laugh at my old art. I still cant fathom how I thought those long necks looked normal XD
