Improvement Meme (Updated) by StarshipSorceress Improvement Meme (Updated) by StarshipSorceress
I felt like my old improvement meme needed some re-doing and updating (the first time I didnt even know how to properly fit the pictures into the boxes XD).

I added more pictures to the last few years because I feel it shows a better progression of my work, as it's changed pretty drastically from year to year. I still remember the process of making most of these pieces. Especially my first Loki fanart, I was so freakin' proud of that you have no idea XD

Sorry if the print is too small, it looked bigger when I was typing D:

Dang that 1 year leap from 17 to 18 must have been REALLY tough! Long hours. Were you in school at the time or did you just practice by yourself at the time? Were you in any type of school at that time?

Ugh yeah, lots of frustration and ripping out my hair. I still do that now, but man I was particularity angsty between 2011 and 2013.

I havent been formally enrolled into a full time school but I did take a brief class on Saturdays about Observational Drawing near the end of 2012. The teacher was ridiculously amazing at drawing what he saw, so I learned several good tips from him :) Lots of practice and study (i have hundreds of DA tutorials in a folder o.O) is really what helped me overall. As I got better it became easier to understand the concepts he had tried to teach me.

Ah ok. Well that's really cool! Keep it up man!

Sometimes I get anxiety about drawing too but I just try and calm myself by thinking, "it's ok, this is just for fun. No worries"

Yeah, doesn't help most of the time LOL

Haha aww yeah, it can be hard to calm yourself down sometimes. If I get too frustrated sometimes I step away for a minute or work on something else, then come back with fresh eyes later.

Progression memes make me feel like it is actually possible for me to develop to be as good as some people on Deviantart... You've progressed hugely in just a few years.

I guess you could say the biggest thing was Deviantart happened. I joined DA near the end of 2011 due to the encouragement of some online friends. I did a lot of art in 2011 on another site, and some of my other artist friends there told me about DA and I decided to join. I had thought I was already pretty good at the time (silly me), but seeing all of the amazing artists here made me realize just how out of my depth I really was.

It sort of opened my eyes to what was really possible in the art field and is probably the final catalyst in my decision to pursue art professionally. 2012 was sort of my "gotta kick things into high gear and catch up" year. I studied lots of the tutorials offered on DA and it's probably been one of the greatest contributors to my overall improvement.

AMAZING!!!!
It is always cool to look back from where you have come from. And you have improved A LOT!!!

I hope you can make it into the art college – it was a blast for me when I began there! It was so cool to be around creative people, having real art lessons and such. I wish you best luck!

Thank you so much!

I really hope I do make it into one...I'm not sure what I'll do if I dont. I'm hoping to get some sort of scholarship because both the options I want are super expensive D:

Which school did you attend? :3

Well, I can just speak for myself. My decision was: If they do not accept me the first time I am applying, I will try it next year again. So long, until they take me.
Just because I KNEW this was what I wanted to do!
Your art is so amazing and I have the feeling that is really your dream carreer. So do give up!!! Maybe it will take longer, but please FOLLOW YOUR DREAM! :aww:

I was in a so-called „Kolleg“. It was for Graphic Design. So I learned as a main part how to layout stuff, use the digital programs, what are the main rules in marketing and communication.
But we also had drawing lessons: Live drawing, architecture, animals ... I LOVED IT!!! Also Illustration we were able to attend. It was so so much fun.

I wish you all the best!!! Believe in your dreams and let no one bring you down and follow another way you do not like! An important thing I learned in my life (thanks to my father). ;)

That's how I feel too...if I don't get accepted or I end up not getting enough financial support, I'll just wait until the next year. I actually took a portfolio class at the school I want to go to, and this was around my 2012 level of art, and the admissions lady said I had a good chance of getting in. So now that I've improved since then I should (hopefully) have an even better chance. It's really expensive though so I'm more concerned about getting enough aid.

That sounds really awesome (: There are definitely some areas I know I could improve greatly on with the help of an art school.

Thank you so much for your encouragement! I really appreciate it!

That sounds fine. :) I am sure your chances of getting in are good.
Just believe in yourself.

The financial thing, yes, that is true. They are really expensive.
But if this is the way meant for you everything will come together somehow.
I am sure many people here on DA are willed to help you out a bit too (commissions etc.).
I did work the year before attending the art school (as it always starts in september only)
and I had to „wait“ until I was able to try the acceptance test.
As it was clear for me that I wanted to go there and it would be expensive I worked this
year to get all the money together. It did work gladly.
My parents would have loved to help my with money, but they have less themselves, so it was clear for me to try to get it together myself.

I wish you great luck with your carreer!!!
If you would like some advices (if I am even able to help here) I will try to help you.

It is my total pleasure. I know how important it is to get encouragement in such a big decision.

Thanks! As far as just drawing, I try to do a little something every day, even if it's just finishing some coloring on a commission or something like that. As far as real practice and study, I aim to do something at least once a month... whether it be studying anatomy, a tutorial, or doing a photo study (a few of my fanart pieces came from face studies..so much more fun to learn with the face of someone you like! XD).
